Homes with sweeping, fenced-in backyards or front yards create the perfect place for animals to thrive. Unfortunately, not all pet owners have this type of living environment. But if your dog is with you, they will be happy no matter what! A huge yard isn’t necessary to maintain their happiness. But, like any pet, dogs need plenty of activity, exercise, and stimulation. Here, Contemporary Management Concepts, LLLP, outlines how to keep your pets happy without a big yard outside your apartment in Florida.

If you live in a city, chances are there is a local dog park nearby! You likely have a handful of neighborhood dog parks within walking distance or a short car ride away. In fact, our apartment community may even have a dedicated outdoor dog park. Whichever dog park you and your pup choose to frequent, remember that socializing your dog is critical to raising a properly trained, friendly dog. Each park often has its own rules and regulations, so be sure to read them first!
One of the best and simplest ways to get a highly energetic pup tuckered out is to go for a long bike ride with them. Florida is home to more than 1,000 natural trails, many of which you and your pup can go for a run, bike ride, or pleasant walk. While you cycle, your pup can run alongside you and attempt to keep pace, run ahead of you, run back, sniff things along the way, and catch up with you again. For well-trained dogs, bike rides are an ideal form of exercise. We advise against cycling with dogs on busy roads, highways, or other dangerous places.
You don’t need a big yard to provide your dog with plenty of opportunities for exercise and exploration. Simply grab a leash and head outside to explore your local neighborhood! Setting out on your local streets is also an excellent way for you and your pup to meet new people and make new friends. Be sure to bring along a collapsible water bowl, fresh water, and their favorite treats! When your dog acts especially restless, they may need a way to release their pent-up energy, so be sure to go out for daily walks, exercise regularly, or go on adventures with them!
Even if you don’t have a huge yard, it doesn’t mean your pup is destined to lie around inside all day with nothing to do or entertain themselves. If you stay indoors for the day, why not set up an indoor obstacle course? It doesn’t have to be complex or take up all of your free space. Use items you have on hand at home to create a training space for your pup and teach them plenty of useful skills, and stimulate their curiosity at the same time. If you have some outdoor space, try creating an obstacle course using hurdles, doggy pools, hula hoops, sticks, poles, and other obstacle items for a fun route for your pup to navigate!
