How To Keep Your Apartment Safe While On Summer Vacation

Temperate weather, long sunny days, and a months-long break from school are a few of the qualities that make summer the perfect season for a vacation. Whether you're going on a family road trip, traveling internationally, or planning on spending a weekend at a beach resort, you'll want to know that your home will be safe while you're away.

Here at Contemporary Management Concepts, LLLP, we're dedicated to providing our residents with a comfortable living experience — and a big part of being comfortable is feeling safe. Clean Up Before Leaving

Not only will returning home to a clean, spotless apartment feel great, but tidying up your apartment before leaving on vacation will help keep bugs and other pests at bay while you're gone. Full garbage bins, unwashed dishes, and dirty laundry are all known for attracting pests when left sitting out. So protect against bugs and bacteria by washing your dishes, emptying trash bins, and doing your laundry before heading out the door.

Check Door & Window Locks

Now, this may sound obvious, but it is surprisingly easy for something as simple as locking up to slip one's mind. No matter how confident you are that everything is locked and secure, always take some time to double-check each lock before leaving. Also, feel free to reinforce entryways that are susceptible to lock failure. Sliding glass door locks, in particular, tend to malfunction fairly often. If you have a sliding glass door, try reinforcing it by laying a stiff rod such as a PVC pipe along the door's track.

Let Apartment Staff Know

If you're going to be gone for more than a couple of days, be sure to inform apartment staff that your unit will be vacant. Generally, apartment staff will be more than willing to keep an eye on your place while you're away. Tell them your departure date and when you plan on returning so they can watch for suspicious activity around the apartment while you're away. Also, ask them to hold any packages that arrive for you, and remember to pick them up from the office when you return.

Test Smoke Detectors

You should always check and change the batteries in your smoke detectors before leaving your apartment for an extended period. A few days before heading out, test each smoke detector in the apartment. To test a smoke detector, simply press and hold its test button down until you hear a loud, sharp siren sound. If the siren sounds weak or does not play, you need to replace the batteries in that smoke detector.
