Make Sure Entrances Are Sealed

Sealing doors and windows can help ensure neither the cold nor bugs escaping the cold get into your home easily. Fall is the best time to ensure sealing is tight while it’s coolish outside but not too cold. For doors and windows, you can pick up appropriately sized weather stripping from a local hardware store. Sealing is easy to install and usually only takes a few minutes. You should look for any cracks or holes around the walls or foundation. You can fill these with spackle or put in a work order through your community to care for them.

Check Your Heater

It’s always best to check to see if something works before you need it. Even if you only use your heater once a year, it’s important to check it in the fall to ensure it works properly. A slight burning smell when you first turn it on is normal; this is just dust and debris being burnt off the heater’s coils. However, if the smell persists or the unit doesn’t turn on, submit a work order with your community to have maintenance come look at things.

Fall Cleaning

Doing a deep cleaning during fall can help you get through the holidays without the extra pressure and start the new year off with less to do. Once the holidays get into full swing, you’ll probably be too busy to clean every day, so doing a deep clean in advance can help lay the foundation for keeping your home clean for longer. This can also be helpful if you’ll be hosting family or friends for the holidays, leaving you with fewer things to check off your list in the weeks leading up to the gathering.

Fire Safety

From jack-o-lanterns on Halloween to cooking and decorating with lights during Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, there can be a lot of fire safety hazards in the fall and winter. Prepare for the worst, so you’re never caught off guard! Replace batteries in smoke detectors, install carbon monoxide detectors, either purchase or ensure that your fire extinguisher is still good, and have a plan for evacuation if a fire in a nearby apartment spreads to yours. If you have a fireplace or a flue, make sure that these are cleaned out before the cold season starts.
